God's Plan For the Family

Intro:

A.      God’s Plan For The Family should be of great interest to all Christians.

B.       Most realize there are more broken homes today than fifty years ago.

C.       But even homes not broken by divorce are unhappy, filled with tension, lacking leadership & spiritual direction & family togetherness.

D.      If we will go back to God’s plan these issues can be resolved.

E.       We’ll examine the answer to these issues and more in this series.

I.         In the beginning…The family

A.      The First Home

1.       Genesis 2:18-25

i.      It was not suitable for man to be alone

1.        God created the woman from man to be a help meet for man.

ii.      Jesus quoted Gen. 2:24 in Matthew 19:5

1.        In next verse He said God joined them together

iii.      Therefore, God performed 1st “wedding ceremony”

2.        Who governs the home?

i.      God ordered and ordained it so He governs it.

1.       Matt 19:6

ii.      Today, Jesus has been given “all authority in heaven and on earth” Matt 28:18

iii.      If He has all authority on earth, He has the right to govern our homes

iv.      His words provide guidance and direction to make our homes happy

3.        The Bible emphasis on the home

a.        God chose Abraham because of his ability Gen 18:19

b.       Moses told Israelites to take care in talking to and teaching their children in the home – Deut 6:4-9

c.        Book of Proverbs filled with with information, encouragement, and exhortation regarding raising children, responsibilities of husbands and wives and children to each other.

d.       The New Testament epistles are filled with admonitions regarding the home.

4.        The organization of the home

a.        This will be discussed in some detail later, we need to understand that God planned the arrangement & organization of the home.

b.       The husband is head of the home

i.      I Cor 11:8-9 as an argument for man’s headship and for the authority of man in I Tim 2:13

c.        The wife is to be in subjection to her husband

i.            She was created for the man

ii.            Also, after the sin, God said that Adam would rule over Eve – Gen 3:16

iii.            Children, are also to be in subjection to their parents – Gen 18:19

5.        Some specified functions of the home

a.        God planned certain activities to be a part of home life.

b.       From this we understand the home is a place of fellowship, sharing, and togetherness

i.            A place to eat and drink – I Cor 11:22

ii.            A place to work – Tit 2:4

iii.            A place for hospitality – I Pet 4:9

iv.            A place to give guidance – I Tim 5:14

v.            Religious instruction is a function of home; responsibility placed upon parents – Eph 6:4

A place of providing – I Tim 5:8
