Discipline – Love Of God And Man

Intro:

  1. Discipline - To train by instruction and control (1 Cor 9:27). The biblical concept of discipline has both a positive side (instruction, knowledge, and training) and a negative aspect (correction, punishment, and reproof). Those who refuse to submit to God's positive discipline by obeying His laws will experience God's negative discipline through His wrath and judgment. (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary)
  2. The New Testament is grand-fathered by the Old Testament
    1. Jesus – High Priest / Sacrificial lamb
    2. The Lord’s Supper / Passover
    3. The Church – Congregation of Israel

II. Israel Was A Self-policing Nation

  1. No Police Force Established By God - Deuteronomy
    1. 13:6-11 Brother / son / etc. stoned by own family
    2. 17:1-7   Followers of false gods killed
    3. 17:8-13 Levites do difficult judging (to purge Israel)
    4. 19:15-20 False / malicious witnesses destroyed
    5. 21:18-21 Stubborn & rebellious child was killed

III. Case Study Of I Corinthians 5

A.  v. 1   The Open Immorality Could Not Be Tolerated

  1. v. 2  The Congregation Had Not Handled The Matter
  2. v. 4-5  Momentary Physical / Mental pain Might Eternal Benefit (Chart 1)

V. How Long Should A Congregation Wait To Discipline An Ungodly Member?

After Other Efforts Have Failed

After approached by the offended – Matt 18:15

Attempt to restore in gentleness and love – Gal 6:1

Attempt to warn – I Thes 5:14

After established by mouth of 2 or 3 – Matt 18:16;   II Cor 13:1

Acts 5:4-11

Immediately

VI. How Should A Congregation Act Toward A Disciplined Member? (Chart 3)

  1. Note who they are – Rom 16:17, II Thes 3:14, Phil 3:17-18
  2. Don’t keep company with – II Thes 3:14, I Cor 5:11
  3. Don’t eat with – I Cor 5:11
  4. Don’t receive into your house – II John 10
  5. Don’t bid him God’s speed – II John 10-11
  6. Count him as a heathen & a publican – Matt 18:7
  7. Avoid – Rom 16:17; I Tim 6:5; II Tim 3:5
  8. Reject – Titus 3:10
  9. Count him as an enemy, but admonish as a brother – II Thes 3:15

VII. How Does One Who Is Disciplined Make Things Right With The Lord & The Congregation Where The Discipline Was Administered?
